Agnes Chan

Agnes Chan or Agnes Miling Kaneko Chan is a pop singer, a television personality , a Doctor of Education, a professor at Japanese universities, an essayist, a novelist, the ambassador of the Japan Committee for UNICEF and a buddhist member of Soka Gakkai.

Career

Agnes Chan began singing and playing guitar in her junior high years in Hong Kong, as volunteer work for fundraising events. She had a chance to record a cover of Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game" with her elder sister, actress Irene Chan, and it became a hit song in Hong Kong. She became famous throughout southeast Asia through several of Chang Cheh's movies, including ''Young People'' and ''The Generation Gap''.

Chan was brought to Japan by Japanese singer/songwriter Masaaki Hirao. In 1972 she recorded her first Japanese pop hit, "Poppy Flower ." Her clear voice, pretty looks, and imperfect Japanese made her a teenage idol. In 1973, Chan's third single, "Splendor in the Grass ," earned her the Japan Record Grand Prix "Rookie of the Year" award.

Chan enrolled in Tokyo's Sophia University and studied for two years, after which she decided to take a break from the entertainment business and study social child psychology at the University of Toronto in Canada.

After graduating in 1978, Chan returned to Japan to resume her singing career. Her first album was released in Hong Kong in 1979. She won a prize for her peace thesis for International Youth Year, 1984. Her first concert in , a benefit for Soong Ching-ling's child fund, was held in 1985 at Beijing's capital gym for an audience of 54,000.

Chan's 1984 visit to Ethiopia during a drastic drought and food shortage was covered for the 's annual "24-Hour TV" charity special. Through these events, she began volunteer work once again, aside from continuing her entertainment career.

In 1986, Chan married her former manager, Tsutomu Kaneko, and gave birth to her eldest son in Canada. After returning to Japan the following year, she began bringing her infant son to the workplace. This was seen as highly controversial and raised the question of a mother's place in the working world.

In 1989, Chan began studying with Stanford University's department of education. During her stay in the United States, she gave birth to her second son. With Myra H. Strober, Chan investigated the situations of ten graduates from and ten years after their graduation. This showed significant differences between the men and women of Japan and the U.S., and earned Chan her Ph.D. Chan returned to Japan as a lecturer, essayist, and university professor. In 1998, Chan was appointed the first ambassador of the Japan Committee for .

Chan's education had a profound impact on her singing career - by the year 2000, her recordings had taken a darker, moodier tone.

In 2002, Chan began her work as a novelist with ''Perfect Couple'' and ''Bullet Ring''.

Chan released her first self-cover single, "Splendor in the Grass 2005 ," in 2005, and it was used as a TV commercial song for a herbal tea by Asahi beverage. Chan's latest single is "Flower of Happiness ". She won the 14th '' Education Award'' presented by Hiroshima University on October.

Her new English-language album ''Forget Yourself'', including a duet with the legendary Chinese performer, Jackie Chan, was released in the United States in February 2006.

Chan is planning to release 3 Japanese new singles on the peace during 2007 and making an album. She's also planning to perform 35th anniversary concerts in about 100 of Japanese cities and Beijing, China in 2007 and 2008.

In October, 2007 it was reported that Chan had undergone surgery for breast cancer in a Tokyo Hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Adam Cheng

Adam Cheng Siu-Chow is a popular TVB actor and singer in Hong Kong.

Career history

He started his career in the 1970s, where he gained a reputation for being the suave leading man in wuxia drama series made by TVB. Many of these are based on novels by Louis Cha and Gu Long. He often sang the theme songs of the TV dramas he starred in, such as ''The Greed of Man'', ''Cold Blood Warm Heart'' and ''Chor Lau Heung''. Many of these series are considered classics. Recently, he played a role in ''The Driving Power'', he sang the theme song in this one also.

He has a total of four daughters. The first one, Cheng On Yee was from a low profile marriage that ended in divorce. He married Lydia Shum in 1985 after 14 years of courtship. They had a daughter, in 1987, but they divorced just eight months after she was born. In 1989, he remarried and had another two daughters, and .

He has continued acting in TV series by TVB today and is considered one of the most enduringly popular actors of the company.

The Ding Hai Effect

In the 1990s, TVB aired the classic drama ''The Greed of Man'', which centred heavily around the stock market, and the schemes and plots of those who struck it rich in the market. Cheng's character in the drama, Ding Hai, made an immense fortune by short selling derivatives and stocks during a bear market. Many people went broke, but the Ding family became richer and richer until an eventual defeat by the family's nemesis.

Cheng is associated with the Ding Hai Effect, a peculiar and unexplained phenomenon that apparently causes a drop in global stock markets whenever he stars in a new TV show. No reason is given for this effect, and it has been a popular topic amongst stock brokers years after the drama series was broadcast in Hong Kong in 1993.

Aaron Kwok Fu-Shing is a popular Hong Kong singer and . The media refer to Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau and Leon Lai as the Cantopop . He has been dubbed "Hong Kong's Michael Jackson" for his onstage dancing displays.

After graduating from secondary school, Kwok worked as a junior staff in King Fook Gold & Jewellery Co. Ltd., as his father, who owns a small gold retail store, desired that he gain experience in the business with the view of eventually handing the family business over to him.

Professional life

In 1984, Kwok joined a dancer training course at , where his talent for dancing was immediately recognized. There, Kwok performed in music videos and variety shows. In 1985, Kwok's outstanding performance in a pageant show was spotted. He was transferred to the acting department of the talent training course and became a TV actor, where he played a few bit parts in TV dramas.

In the early 1990s, a Taiwanese motorcycle TV commercial gained him instant popularity and he burst onto the music scene with his now famous song Loving You Forever , and accompanying dance moves. The next few years saw his popularity reach fever-pitch, and he was soon ranked alongside the most popular artistes of the time.

Kwok has been one of Hong Kong and Asia's most prominent popstars. Over the last decade or so, Kwok has won over a hundred music awards. As a solo performer, he has played in over 200 concerts in Hong Kong, China, and around the world. However, Aaron has not been able to maintain his musical career in the new millennium, and his record sales in recent years have dwindled to new lows.

Over the years, Kwok has also indulged in other mediums such as TV commercials and film acting, most notably in collaboration with director/cinematographer +Kwok has also done extensive public service and charitable work, for which he was amongst the winners of the Ten Most Outstanding Young Persons Award, 2003.

Kwok's works have earned him a large following of fans. Of all the performing arts at which Aaron excels, stage appearances remain his perennial favorite. In addition, Aaron Kwok has starred in various movies, television drama series and commercials.

Even though Ekin Cheng dated Maggie Sui for many years early in his career, their relationship ended. Soon afterward he worked with Gigi Leung and they started dating in 1999. The press and many of Maggie Sui's fans slighted him over this, and the ensuing scandal caused a downturn in both his career and that of Gigi Leung. In 2006, Cheng and Leung broke up, ending their seven-year relationship.

In September 2006, Cheng and Yoyo Mung began dating through their mutual interest in badminton.

Professional Life

2006 saw the publication of Ekin's first book, 'Looking Into Ekin's Eyes'.This book was very successful and in now in its third edition. In 2007 a Japanese version of the book was published.

Movies

His first film was ''Girls Without Tomorrow'' and at the time he was still going by the name Dior Cheng. He changed his name to Ekin before his breakout role in the Young and Dangerous series as Chan Ho Nam. The film was first meant to glorify the triad life, but after about the third film, the story focused more on the characters and explored the truth about the Hong Kong triads. It became so popular that it launched Ekin Cheng and co-star Jordan Chan to superstar status. And because of its incredible success, it is said to have made many youngsters at that time fond of the triad life, thus making Teens throughout Asia join the triads. Though with no solid evidence, its impact no doubt made Triads look good in the eye of young people. It also started a trend for triad films around that time and is considered to be a classic. The film led to 6 sequels, all starring Ekin Cheng, and a lucrative working partnership with director Andrew Lau. Together they went on to make ''The Storm Riders'', which was the highest-grossing Hong Kong movie at the time and the first film to utilize a truly large number of special effects. They also worked together on ''The Legend of Speed'' a film about a street racer who would follow his father's footsteps of becoming a racing god, ''A Man Called Hero'' a movie adaption of the famous Comic, about a Martial Arts master in America ''The Duel'' starring Cheng, Andy Lau, and a few other famous stars, and the comedy ''Women From Mars''.

Ekin Cheng has branched out in the roles he's taken, including more comedy like earlier in his career with ''My Wife is 18'' with Charlene Choi and ''Six Strong Guys'' with singers Hacken Lee, Andy Hui and George Lam. But he still does action-oriented films like ''The Twins Effect'' where he acts with rising pop superstars Twins. And ''Tokyo Raiders'' where he is cast with International Superstar Tony Leung and Superstar pop diva Kelly Chen. My Wife is 18 tells the story of an arranged marriage between 30 year old Ekin Cheng and 18 year old Charlene Choi. The significant age difference between the two is the source of the comedy. Six strong guys tell the story of Cheng and his other five friends who tell funny stories of the modern Hong Kong man. The Twins effect is an action film about the feuds between vampires and Humans who both share the same world. Toyko Raiders is about international thievery in Toyko.

Recently Cheng returned to the movie scene , He had a brief appearance in My Name is Fame as himself. Soon after that he starred in Heavenly Mission a triad/cop thriller starring alongside Stephen Fung & . He has completed a Pang Brothers film called The Forest of Death, which was released in March 2007. His serial filmed in Mainland China based on the life of martial arts master, Huo Yuanjia with former Young & Dangerous co-star Jordan Chan is currently in syndication. Current projects include a sequel to the blockbuster The Storm Riders, also directed by Pang Brothers and The Legend of Kamui being filmed in Japan. Ekin Cheng's latest film with Shawn Yue ''Rule Number 1'' directed by Kelvin Tong, won Best Actor Awards for both Cheng and Yue.

Ekin Cheng's golden age was during the Young and Dangerous era. At the turn of the century his popularity declined and he has been criticized as being merely an accidental superstar. He has also been criticized by some as being a wood-like actor with little expression or feeling in his work. Despite these criticisms, Ekin Cheng has continued to make movies throughout his career and currently is once again enjoying considerable success.

Music

Cheng had a successful music career with BMG. But in the 2000s, he signed with , a juggernaut company owned by Albert Yeung. Under this company he was 'frozen' and not allowed to put out any records. But as is a custom with EEG, he made several movies with other EEG stars. As of 2004, his contract with EEG ended and he returned to BMG where he released a new record. As of 2005, Cheng is an artist of BMA Records. Through the course of his career, he has made several hits. Though many criticise Cheng for not having a voice capable of singing harder or higher-noted songs. And though his music career has been going smoothly, his most-acclaimed music came during the Young and Dangerous age. The theme song for Young and Dangerous 1 "Age of Friendship" is considered his best. Though he and Jordan Chan both sing a separate version, it was Cheng who sang it first.

In 2007, Cheng made a guest appearance at a Leo Ku concert and received popular applause from the audience.

Radio

In the 1990s, Cheng also starred in a number of radio dramas.

Dicky Cheung

Dicky Cheung Wai Kin is a Hong Kong television actor. He is the winner of the 3rd annual New Talent Singing Awards in 1984.

He entered show business in the early 1980's, signing a contract with television station TVB. He was struggling for many years working as a low-paid actor, singer, and appearing occasionally in films.

It was not until his brilliant portrayal of the Monkey King character in the of the classical Chinese novel ''Journey to the West'' that his popularity began to skyrocket. He played the role so beautifully and experienced that everyone enjoyed it. A sequel to the TV adaptation was planned, but due to a contract dispute with TVB, Dicky left before production began. Benny Chan Ho Man took over the role of the Monkey King in the sequel. Dicky then went abroad to Taiwan to continue his career.

He appeared in many Taiwanese television productions since then, but none were groundbreaking. In 1999, TVB's rival station acquired the Hong Kong broadcasting rights to his Taiwanese television series Young Hero Fong Sai Yuk. Dicky portrayed Fong Sai Yuk, a character also portrayed by Jet Li in his film . To everyone's surprise, the show was an instant hit in Hong Kong, and managed to gain much higher ratings than TVB's own television series. Ironically enough, the TVB series showing at that time was Dragon Love, starring Benny Chan Ho Man, who replaced Dicky in the sequel, Journey to the West II.

In recent features in Hong Kong interviews and news, Dicky has since become a proud father. He also said he would like to eventually leave the acting business and seriously consider doing something more meaningful things in life such as volunteering to give back to society.

Notable Roles

Since then, Dicky has starred in many Hong Kong-Taiwanese television productions, enjoying both success in Taiwan as well as Hong Kong. The two most notable are:

Duke of Mount Deer 2000

Yet another TV adaptation of Jin Yong's popular novel The Deer and the Cauldron. Dicky portrayed the anti-hero Wai Siu-Bo, a character previously portrayed by Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Stephen Chow and Jordan Chan in many television and film adaptations.

The Monkey King: Quest for the Sutra

In 2001, Andy Lau's production company produced another television adaptation of Journey to the West. Dicky was given a chance to once again portray the role that made him a household name. The series was broadcasted in 2002 on TVB. Although it received high ratings, many felt it was not as good as the 1996 version.
